The mime application/x-www-form-urlencoded media type is a non-standard MIME type. In other words, it is not officially registered with IANA. Though non-standard, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which is the international community responsible for developing Web standards, recommends the use of mime application/x-www-form-urlencoded for HTML Web forms. A Web user interacts with an HTML form through a variety of controls such as buttons, checkboxes, text input boxes, and menus. When coders create HTML forms, they enter lines of code responsible for the form’s elements and appearance as well as for telling Web browsers what type of content the HTML is. A “FORM” element is used to contain this information. The mime application/x-www-form-urlencoded entry appears under the enctype (content type) attribute. This tells the Web browser that the file is an encoded form. Mime application/x-www-form-urlencoded is the default value specified for the FORM element. While not officially registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, the mime application/x-www-form-urlencoded is commonly used with HTML forms. The encoded form data is often sent in either HTTP GET or POST requests as well as via email, in the case of email forms. When this happens, the media type is placed in the message’s header Content Type field. This tells the browser or email client that the content is URL encoded form data. |
