The mime application/x-msdownload MIME type is a non-standard MIME type. Any MIME type with a subtype that starts with “x-” is not registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

Though mime application/x-msdownload is not officially registered, there is some information available about the contents of files labeled as mime application/x-msdownload. This description is usually used when an executable file or a DLL file is contained within the attachment. Executable files, or .exe files, are program files that carry out specific commands while DLL files are Dynamic Link Library files that are used to carry out specific programmed functions within a program.

Because of the risky nature of executable files, and because DLL files can also contain potentially dangerous or malicious code, most e-mail programs and services block these files. Under some circumstances, the mime application/x-msdownload MIME type may be replaced by a different mime type such as application/octet-stream.

Despite its name with the “msdownload” conjuring up images of a Microsoft download subtype, Windows does not recognize the mime application/x-msdownload. According to the list of file associations on Windows.com, Windows does not recognize this file type.

If you encounter a MIME type with the x-msdownload subtype, use caution before opening the file as it could be a malicious executable file.
