A non-standard MIME type, the mime application/x-msdos-program content type indicates the presence of a Microsoft DOS program. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, also known as IANA, is responsible for registering MIME types. Any MIME type with a subtype using an “x-” in front of the subtype’s name is non-standard. This means that mime application/x-msdos-program has not been officially registered with IANA. This doesn’t mean that the mime application/x-msdos-program is not used, however. This MIME type is commonly used in download scripts. For example, when you download a program from a website, you’ll often be prompted with a dialog box for opening or saving the file. Programmers often enter mime application/x-msdos-program as the content type in download scripts. When browsers encounter the script, this tells them that the file is a MS DOS program file, most likely an .exe file. From there, the browser should then generate the dialog box prompting the user to open or save the file. When your Web browser or email program encounters mime application/x-msdos-program, it may also generate a warning message as executable programs can be potentially dangerous to your computer. Use care whenever prompted to open an executable file, especially if the file randomly appears. |
