MIME Application/x-java-jnlp-file

The media type mime application/x-java-jnlp-file is used with JNLP files. JNLP files are Java Network Launching Protocol files which are XML-formatted files used to launch and manage Java programs on the Internet or as applications hosted on a network.

JNLP are used with Java Web Start which is a framework used to launch Java applications from within Web browsers. Note that these applications are not applets; applets run within the browser while JPNL files launch applications from within the browser. The JNPL file contains information and parameters surrounding the Java application. In order for JNPL files to work as designed, they must contain the mime application/x-java-jnlp-file MIME type and the Web server must be configured to recognize the mime application/x-java-jnlp-file MIME type. Some Web servers such as Tomcat 4.0.x and above are already configured to recognize mime application/x-java-jnlp-file while others may need to be configured manually.

Because Java Web Start and the mime application/x-java-jnlp-file MIME type have been in existence for several years, itís not unreasonable to expect that most modern Web servers recognize this MIME type as a JNLP file. This MIME type is not specifically listed with by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
