MIME Application/binary

The MIME file type mime application/binary isn’t an actual registered MIME type though we can gather from the binary subtype that a file labeled mime application/binary would be a binary file. Binary files can contain any type of data encoded in binary format. The binary format uses sets of 8 binary digits (called octets) consisting of 0s and 1s. For example, 01010111 01001111 01010111 spells “wow” using the binary alphabet.

The first and last set of eight digits represents the letter “w” with the second octet representing the letter “o”. While this example converts binary octets into characters, binary files can contain all types of data including images. In order for a computer to properly interpret the binary data, it must look to the file’s headers and metadata so that it can use the appropriate program or character set to interpret the data. As far as mime types go, mime application/binary or mime application/octet-stream do not adequately identify the file’s structure. The computer may recognize that the file is binary thanks to the mime application/binary content type but it may be up to the user to determine the correct application for working with the file.

Binary files primarily containing text may be labeled with the text/plain mime media type rather than mime application/binary. On the other hand, if the file is determined to be primarily binary, the application/octet-stream MIME type is generally used.
