MIME Application JavaDespite its basic name, mime application java is not an actual MIME type and it is not registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. In fact, many different Java MIME types are widely used and recognized by Web browsers including application/x-java-vm, application/x-java-bean, application/x-java-jnlp and application/x-java-applet. For the most part and even though the usage is non-standard, “mime application java” indicates that the primary MIME media type is an application with a subtype indicating a Java .class file. Java .class files are Java bytecode files. With Java, source code is compiled and output into bytecode with the .class file extension. The .class file, or multiple .class files, can then be loaded into any Java Virtual Machine, regardless of the computer’s operating system. While mime application java may not be on record as the official MIME type for Java, this doesn’t mean that it isn’t used and isn’t recognized by Web browsers. Most Web browsers and user agents look first at the MIME type to determine what type of file is being served. If the mime application java entry is not recognized, the user agent will go through additional checks and tests to determine the content of the file. It’s possible that while the browser might not recognize mime application java, it will be able to verify the file as a .class file based on other information contained in the file’s header. |
